Very close to it's mot now. one of the problems that needs ironing out is that there is coolant leaking out from around one of the nuts/washer/stud of the thermostat housing. I have nipped the nut up a bit more but no joy. Is it a stud issue, not being screwed into the head completely or is there something i can put on the stud to stop the water getting past it to the top?

It won't affect the MOT but does need sorting soon.
Bite the bullet and clean up the cylinder head where it sits.Inspect the stud, although for little expense, I'd replace all three studs, clean up the surfaces and pop on a new gasket.You only need to partially drain the water.Much more likely to be a permanent solution than chasing a continual leak with other short term " cures / remedies ".

I had similar on my MGB. I had to renew the thermostat housing and studs and didn't seal the stud threads where they screw into the head and had water seeping out the threads.
I put them back in with some Hylomar blue on the threads and it solved it.

Sorry should have said. I have already replaced the thermostat, housing and gasket.

Seal the threads as above, or even use thread tape......
