DIY Plating

My latest purchase is a DIY plating kit, lots of small parts that look generally scruffy and tatty, and if your rebuilding things part of the way i work is to make it look nice, bright zinc also has the benfit of corrosion prevention. The kit also has the passivates in for the yellow gold, or the blue white style. Not tried them yet but had a crack at the plating tonight and I am really impressed with the results. Its quite fascinating actually to put things in the tank and watch them plate. All of the parts below were dull and tatty.[frame][/frame]

did you use the derusting electrolysis first .
I had some rusty lathe parts, used the electrolysis derusting first then a chemi-blacking solution, had to redo some again but have the basic kit for plating just need the chemicals for this and was wondering how good it is.

I didn't use the electrolysis method. It was a good clean with wire brush and elbow grease, and a prologed soak in white vinegar to get the worst off, then more wire brush. Cleanliness is key.

The kit comes with some nasty chemicals, a very strong alkaline de greaser - sodium hydroxide and then an acid pickle before going into the plaing solution. It also comes with all of the COSHH information so you know where you are with it, and the safety equipment.

I have not tried the passivate solution, you get the gold and blue in the kit. I know I have seen the black solution on their website, sure that will provide the blackodised look.

I would suspect that it's really good, follow the instructions to the letter and it worked for me. I shall hopefully get chance over the weekend to try the gold passivate as I want to do the carb parts. Seems a great solution for where paint wont work like the dynamo strap, or you can even zinc plate and then paint for corrosion prevention.

I hightly rate the company, very professional, very good kit, good instructions and were very helpful in providing me exactly what I required and tailor made the kit for me. Google classic plating, its a good website.

Now to work out how to dip the whole car in and plate her !
