I am thinking about fitting a roof rack to my traveller,
But want a classic looking one.
does anyone know who sells them?
Tried Moss and Bull motif but no joy.
Even maybe a one off as long as it's not too dear. .

You realise it's an aluminium roof - and aluminium gutters......

I've always been led to believe that travs and roof racks are not a happy combination.

They pop up on ebay all the time, search Desmo Roofrack, Paddy Hopkirk Roofrack, Vintage Roofrack, Classic Roofrack, even old VW roofrack,
The VW and Rat Look scene love an old roofrack. They generally sell for about £50 to £100 depending on condition and if they have nice wooden slats on them.
If you don't want to have it posted, change the search perpetrator to 'Distant nearest' and only search 'used'. You can even put a price limit in.
Yes the Traveller has alloy roof and gutters but I don't think a light roof rack put on for cosmetic reasons will damage it as long as you don't do the feet up that tight it crimps the gutters!
I'm actally in the process of making a roofrack for my Traveller out of an old roof rack I purchased on ebay for £10. I'll post a couple of pictures over the weekend.
Good luck with your search.

I know that the gutters are only pinned on too!
It would maybe more of a show thing, than a pile all your luggage on it thing,
However given that it would be there so is the temptation to use it I suppose?

Take care as the roofrack unladen will flex the gutters and knock your mpg down

There you go, this one is nice and has a sensible postage cost. I'd carefully make some wooded slates to finish it off.

There is a luggage box device that clips on a towbar but not very good when you want to open the rear doors

well,each to their own

You have a traveller put a roof rack on it that you can't use ,but it does cut down mpg and cause wind noise, risk damaged to the body, for the sake of cosmetics

Not for me,if I had a traveler.(on wish list, got my eye on one thats been dry stored for the last 20 years and is very good condition with no welding done or needed and the wood is as new. Just needs the new wings ,that were replaced 15 years ago, painting.Mechanics re commisioning .Have the first refusal once he decides to let it go) won't be looking for a roof rack though.

They made the traveller so you didn't need a roof rack imho they look awful

Not sure those small rubber feet would be safe on an aluminium roof! I had a similar rack on an Austin Devon (steel roof) but it had rather large rubber feet, like big white suction pads to spread the load. The noise they make at 50mph is phenomenal and presumably the force on the roof unloaded is also high. The 2 gutter clamps had to be well tight to prevent the rack moving so I fear damage to gutters too. I'm a bit pessimistic too.....

When I bought my '56 Split Screen Traveller (in 2012), it came with a roof rack "kit" (not fitted, but chucked in the back).
It actually looks very usable and robust but does rest on the alloy gutters. It is made up of two "double" cross-members.
I'll have to "dry" fit it to the car and take some pictures to post up on here. Won't have time tomorrow, so will do this over the next couple of weeks.
George.

I've got a Desmo that you can have for a modest sum.
Bought for the saloon but decided against fitting it.

Here's my test bed to test the feet clamp to the Alloy Gutters tightly without moving or cinking the gutters. It also allowed me to check my measurements were correct. Ignore the type of wood & shape, I know it looks rubbish.

And this is my plan, which will be stained the same colour of my wood, with 3 extra slates across the middle of the car. Might get a couple of round lucas reflectors for the rear aswell.[frame]

(Notice I now have nice new inertia seat belts front and rear - Securon red ones, I hope to provide the details with part no's with photos soon). And today I fitted my new drivers ESM diaphragm and seat base.

Your Traveller is looking good, worth the wait! Just got my back doors off and hope to get them looking as good as yours...

I thought your wood looked fine in your pictures, mine has had a decent repair (extra wood put in) on the right rear pillar and all my lights on the back are cocked up - I'll solve this by fitting amber indicators, which is a shame.
