1275 engine to 1098 gearbox - clutch?

Hi,
I'm planning to re-instate a 1098 gearbox into Abby (fed up with consistently failing type 9!!), so having acquired a gearbox and relevant 'bits' I'm left with the problem of what clutch to use.
The Moggy one doesn't match up to the 1275 Midget flywheel and vice versa. Plus the Moggy flywheel won't fit onto the midget engine without re-drilling the bolt holes (six holes on Midget, four on Moggy and they don't match up position-wise).
So do I need to get the Moggy flywheel re-drilled? The two flywheels appear to be the same size, so I'm assuming it will mate with the starter motor once done, especially as they're both 'A' series engines.
Or is there a clutch combination that does the trick here?

I believe that suitable Flywheels are available from.esm.

Just use the Midget clutch on the 1275 fly. Some seem to think it is heavy/sudden - others think it's fine. There is a well reported mod to lengthen an arm on the mech to bring it all back to normal Minor feel.

Fittting the 1098 linkage to the 1275 diaphram clutch will give a very sharp, heavy pedal change, not good news for the cross London commute! The solution is to weld an extra inch onto the clutch relay shaft outer lever which connects to the pedal and to re drill the hole for the linkage rod. For added release bearing life it is worth fitting the roller bearing release bearing. This will restore normal pedal feel and travel

Many thanks for the above answers, I should perhaps add that I will be retaining my hydraulic clutch set up.
From the above, it looks like I should source a Midget clutch kit. I've spotted this on eBay, link below.............

I think the Thrust Bearing would need to be the carbon type (supplied) for this, rather than the roller bearing type.............

This flywheel will not fit directly to 1275 Sprite/Midget engine due to the locating dowel or dowels in the crankshaft being off-set.

Further to the above, should the chap in Norwich be looking to retain his original Minor flywheel then and purchase a suitable clutch kit from the likes of ESM??

If you have hydraulic clutch pedal - then easy -peasy, that's what the Midget uses.

Get your local machine shop to face off the 1275cc Midget flywheel so removing the raised centre of the flywheel and index drill a new set of dowel and bolt holes for the 7 1/2" clutch cover.
Recently had this done and it cost me £80 all in.
Having this done allows a greater choice of clutch covers.[frame]

I have just been speaking to 'mike1970mog' who now has my old type 9 kit and is looking to fit the type 9 to his 1098 engine.
Like me he is looking for a suitable clutch kit, can anyone post up a link for one here for him, or message him with a link or two.

The flywheel modification was originally offered by MOSS and was listed in their Performance Manual MGL0114.
The modified flywheel allows the fitting of a 7 1/2" clutch which is suitable for either Ford or BMC/BL clutch cover and centre plate.[frame]

This is the diaphragm clutch cover I used with my Ford gearbox conversion and the centre plate for normal use is a standard 7.5 x 23 spline plate. Here is the cover mounted on the modified Midget flywheel.
Both Ford items fit the modified Midget flywheel.[frame]

Here is a link to a similar clutch to the one I have fitted to my Minor.
Make sure that the number of splines on clutch centre plate is the same as the first motion shaft and that the clutch pressure plate is the right diameter

pillthehill that presher plate looks a lot like a ford cortina 1.6 pinto 20teeth (spline) clutch kit
is there a 23 teeth (spline) 7.5" clutch plate i can get any where sorry about my spelling

pillthehill you posted qwicker than i can right back to you morris minor clutch plate is 7.5" so if i can get 7.5" 180 to 190mm 23 spline clutch plate and a presher plate to fit to morris minor flywheel bolts i hope thanks for replys

Yes you should be ok with that combination but make sure that you have adequate clearance inside the bell housing for the pressure plate.
The clutch fitted to my Minor is a RS2000 competition set up with a 23 spline centre plate and it really is a tight fit inside the bell housing. It has a overall free height of 55mm.

I would stick with the Minor manual linkage clutch mechanism modified as explained. It is a lot easier than messing about with installing hydraulics, and probably a lot cheaper. I have it on my 1275 Traveller and proved that it works

hi i am going to stick with manual linkage clutch mechanism but because im fitting type 9 im going to make a mount for the little rod that go in the plastic ball in the 1098 gearbox for the clutch there is a plate that hold plastic ball in with to 11mm bolts or is there any one who has done it befor
the post that say about manual linkage clutch mechanism did you mean you have type 9 5 speed and stay with manual linkage clutch mechanism or you still got 4 speed ribed box
