Negative earth.

Post by Rocktart »

Hope I can get a nudge in the right direction. I have just bought a 67 4 door and unlike my Traveller it has been converted for negative earth. I haven't had the car 24 hrs yet and have found a few things not working. Indicators, fuel gauge, heater fan and prob few others. Could this be related to the earth change? Or where do I start. Any help most appreciated thanks

Not related to the earth change I expect.
Sounds like the ignition live fuse has gone, 35 amp, on the bulkhead, with white and light green wires coming from it.

Just seen that the fuel gauge doesn't work too.
Problem with the ignition live circuit somewhere.

Why would polarity affect anything?? As above - it's blown the fuse... Real question is - why has this happened? Maybe just the fuse /holder slightly corroded and needing cleaned. Have you done anything - added anything to the car ?

Thanks guys. Have only just had a chance to look properly. The reason I questioned the negative earth was purely as I have not done the conversion before and not sure if it effects the layout at all. I only bought the car 2 days ago and the previous owner said they did the alternator and have not driven it since. Now I have looked the fuse had indeed blown. However the indicators don't flash and when selected either direction the fuse blows. I am thinking I should start at the bulb and work back as the holders do look rather rusty? The ignition is also very loose and when the key is put in it feels weird (whole thing want to turn)
One final question is after the respray they appear to have refitted everything with minimum bolts etc and I need door bolts and Bumper bolts, does anyone know the sizes or should I just ebay them?

Just in case the flasher unit is faulty - take it out and join all 3 wires together temporarily What happens now?

most of the minor traders will stock the bolts and nuts you need.
