Gold face speedo transplant questions

I have 2 of these a 90 and an 80MPH.I want to fit one in my '59 Traveller(its not actually a '59 but the V5 says it is,so because DVLA know everything about everything and are never wrong I'll leave it that way as it makes it MOT exempt). At present it has the 90MPH black face speedo/fuel gauge with ballast resistor.I understand that I can't fit the gold fuel gauge?I wondered if anyone had transplanted the gold face fuel gauge front dial onto a black face gauge?Hope its not an obvious question its just that I havent attempted to scrutinise them as yet.
TIA
Mick

I have. I transplanted a gold fuel gauge face onto a black fuel gauge, and fitted to a 90mph gauge exactly as you describe. The differences are that the E and F marks are more spread out on a gold 'face' gauge, and the needle is obviously white (not black as early examples), meaning it's a tad less accurate (empty is maybe 3mm further on gold), but not really a problem if you make sure it never gets below, say, 1/4 tank.
Gold Speedos also have no mounting on the back for the voltage stabilisers, as in black faced speedos, I think I bolted mine to the underside of the dashboard and made up an extended length of wire to link the stabiliser to fuel gauge.

Thanks a lot for that!

Suppose to save having to find a way to mount the ballast I could just swap the speedo face too.

You could, but the speedo lamp holes would be in the wrong place (ie for oil filter/pressure lamp on black faced speedos at 'sort of' 3 and 6 o'clock, and gold which have either one lamp at 12 o'clock or two at 11 and 2 o'clock). If you'll never use the lights it would work.
Probably easier to just drill a hole in the back of your gold one, pass a bolt through it, and use one nut to secure it and one to secure the stabiliser to it. That's near enough the original design, and no one will (likely) ever see it.

True.
