Oil breather slight oil leak on 950

Post by PaulTubby »

Hi all, a friend of mine has recently bought a 950 minor and hes using it daily... engines running lovely and sounds good, maybe running a little rich but does seem in fine fettle... the engine has no oil leaks what so ever which has amazed me! But he has the breather pipe coming on the front cam cover plate which goes down towards the floor and when idling when warm does drip a little oil .... its not much at all and when he turns it off it drips a little again but again not much..

is this anything to worry about? rocker cover breather all ok and cap and hes recently giving it a oil change and filter as I say sounds superb with no rattles or knocks or blue or grey smoke what so ever..

Sounds fair enough to me. The later cam follower covers are a bit more sophisticated - and may help to contain the oil slightly better. I would fit the later type. He should make sure the pipe from the rocker cover is not kinked or blocked in any way. Also - the hole inside the air filter will only be quite small - he could increase that slightly.... The much better arrangement on later cars is an HS2 SU carb with a brass breather tube on the side - and this is much better at evacuating the fumes, and doesn't plaster them over the paper filter.........
