Km/h Speedos

Hi Folks,

Does anyone know if any Moggies ever came with a km/h dominant speedo?

We're due to go metric on distance and speed here in Ireland on 20th Jan.

I find the small badly lit km/h markings very difficult to read while bouncing along the backroads! :P

Temporarily I've attached a few stickers marking the important km/h speeds, but a Km speedo would be neat.

Bye for now,

Rich

I would think a km speedo would be quite hard to find as they were only fitted to Minors sent to metric countries - I guess 95% of Minors went to imperial countries? A lot of effort involved in sourcing one, fitting it and then changing vehicle/insurance documentation to show the changed reading.

It would be much easier to learn the equivalent speeds surely? You only need to know that 50kmh (=32mph), 60(36), 70(42), 80 (49), 90 (55) and 100 (62mph).

I have seen a few Mini ones. Maybe you could get hold of one of them and get it calibrated to the Minor?

Holden Vintage and classic do a little gearbox you connect the speedo cable to and it converts mph to kph. code no. Part number: 091.549

other places probably do it too....

km/h speedo exists but i'm in doubt i would be sold in UK. If you want it, i think you'll have to buy it ni Belgium or Netherlands. Bad news is that parts are very expensive on this side of the chanel (50%-100% more expensive)

Here three adresses:
in Netherlands
http://www.morrisminorcentre.nl (shop)
http://www.morrisminorclub.nl (dutch MMOC)
in Belgium
http://www.angloparts.com (shop)

I've phoned the Belgian shop and it's very expensive! It's about 300€

I wish I'd known that before I made one for my wife's Traveller.
After installation of a Marina engine and gearbox and with a Midget differential, her speedo was about 62% true. Well, I suppose if my home made one fails I can just buy a new one.

Hi folks,

Thanks for the info. I was quite sure they didn't exist, but I'll have to save the cash for while yet as €300 is quite a lot.

It looks like I'll be sticking with the stickers at the mo'.

The Gardai here have promised us a 'no tolerance' approach to the change over. :-?

Most cars here would have mph speedo's, apart from a small percentage of Japanese imports. All new cars will have to be supplied with km/h speedo's.

Hmmmm, I can see the accident claim forms already................................sorry officer I didn't see him stop , I was too busy trying to read the speedo!!!

Thanks guys,

Rich

Hi Galaxie - Thanks for the warning! We're planning our annual visit with the Traveller to Kerry at Easter and I wouldn't have known otherwise..... You'll be driving on the other side of the road next!

All the best
Alastair

When I was in Germany I bought a KMH speedo from a Mini and fitted just the outer to my Minor speedo. This meant i had a speedo that went upto 140.

So get a speedo from a Mini and swop over the face.

John,

shouldn't the speedo be calibrated (mechanism to display)? The turns/mile (or Km) are different aren't they(?)

Yes, it should be re-calibrated. There are a couple of companies that will do this. Speedy Cables and another one mentioned recently........ (have a search in the past posts for speedo calibration).
