I'm replacing the indicator switch as the original is very worn and no longer working properly (or easily fixable). The original had 5 wires but the replacement has 6: Brown & black, green & white, black, green & purple, green & yellow, and green. It’s a ‘repro’ one rather than original Lucas - I needed one in a hurry as it’s MOT time.

I’ve noticed that an ebay seller selling the same item states:

Note: The original switches had 5 wires, which meant the earth had to travel to the switch via the steering column, after a period this can cause problems due to poor earth and higher resistance from this route, so this switch allows the earth to be made directly via the switch wiring.

I would be grateful for advice regarding which wire goes where. Thank you

The BLACK wire will be the extra external earth. The others should colour match with what you have at present - I hope !

The new indicator switch will come with it's mini loom attached. Disconnect battery of course.Undo the two Philips screws to remove the old indicator switch.Take a piccie of the underside of the switch , where the wires emerge or draw a diagram with the colours.
Find the bullet connectors, round about the lower dashboard level and simply replace one at a time onto the new switch.Placing the new and the old switch in the same orientation will help.

Brown /Black , a thicker wire will be the same.

Standard size wires
Green / White, ( Right hand side flashers ) the same
Black, earth the same
Green / purple I guess will be a substitute for the original Green/ Brown
Green / Yellow I guess will be a substitute for the original Green / Red ( Left hand flashers )
Green I guess will be a substitute for the original Light Green ( supply for the Flasher light on the stalk ).

Taking one wire at a time will ensure you get it right first time.

Thanks both I'll hopefully get a chance to try replacing it on Sunday so will report back.

I fitted the replacement switch today. The 'substitute' wiring colours were not exactly as per Bob's suggestions but by following the connections on the old indicator and replacing the wires one at a time I managed to work it out. The old wiring didn't have any bullet connections though - the wires were crimped together - so I had to fit some new bullet holders to the old wiring so that the bullet connectors on the switch wiring would fit. They were a bit tricky to get at though as the old wires were short. Plus I had the added problem of a neighbours cat coming into the garage, climbing into the footwell, and refusing to get out Anyway, job done and the switch is working fine
