Cleaning metal parts

Thanks for all the help.

As people may know from other threads, I intend to restore my old distributor as a spare and fix my carb in the future. I've noticed people are able to get metal parts looking like new or better. This is probably over the top for me, but I was just wondering what the best way is to clean and rust proof metal parts like the dizzy assembly. White spirit and a stainless steel brush only seems to go so far.

Alloy wheel cleaner and tooth brush..... Clean the brush well afterwards...

Thanks, ordered.

Would that also cut through rust (there isn't much, but a little), and do I need anything to coat it afterwards?

Oral-B or Colgate (yes I am kidding).
