1275 mg using a moggy fan
Hi .info required 1098 moggy fan fitting to mg engine is a spacer required to clear the chain case breather or is mg fan different thanks .mike

Either flatten the breather can (this is the norm) - or bend the fan slightly - or yes fit a spacer - or fit an electric fan !

The later 1275cc MG was fitted with two different multi-bladed cooling fans 12G1597 (plastic fan) and AEG559 (metal fan).
The Minor is usually fitted with a two bladed metal fan AEA301 which can be doubled up to give 4 blades if required.
There are three spacers available that can be fitted between the fan and water pump hub to allow the fan blades to clear the timing chain cover breather.
1. 7/8" thick - Pt No: PGX10001 (Mini Spares)
2. 11/16 thick - Pt No: 12G2452 (Somerford Mini)
3. 3/16" thick - Pt No: 12A312 (Mini Spares)
The Minor is usually fitted with a two bladed metal fan AEA301 which can be doubled up to give 4 blades if required.

I think there is plenty of room between the rad and fan, and the spacer does seem more professional than taking a hammer to the breather canister. Presumably why they sell spacers.

Only if you use too thick a spacer.
Select only the minimum thickness required to give clearance.
If using the later MG fan you cannot bend the plastic blades to clear the breather you have to use the appropriate spacer.
Personally I would not even attempt to bend the blades of the MG multi blade metal fan as you could set up a vibration that could lead to fan blade failure.
Mini Spares can supply a timing cover with a modified breather that allows the fan blades to clear the breather Pt No: LJR10168.
The use of the correct spacer is the right way to overcome the clearance problem.
Select only the minimum thickness required to give clearance.

Cutting half inch off the back edge of the fan would seem the easiest and best way of clearing the the breather

It is possible to trim the breather can down nicely - and weld on a flat front.. A Multi blade fan will be noisy - and use power, Simple 2 blade fan is plenty for the UK... remember the 1275 block is slightly longer - so the fan may already be closer to the rad before adding any spacers...

If the 1275cc block is longer (and I have not got a 948/1098cc to compare against), the longer measurement will be rearwards as the front face of the block whether it is a 948/1098 or 1275cc is set by the front engine plate and the engine mountings.
From the front face of a 1275cc block to the front of the water pump/pulley is a max of 110mm.
From the front face of a 1275cc block to the front of the water pump/pulley is a max of 110mm.

My 1275 MG engine came with 4 spacing washers with flats on one side so that they would all fit together on the fan blades. I used 2 x two bladed fans because I had them and they just clear the canister and rad. Noise and power loss are not really a consideration against the general din of the exhaust and body rattles of the Traveller

It is longer overall - so may be pushed forward on the front mounts by the rear mounts - this is why I qualified it with 'may be' ....

Having witnessed a Midget engined Minor have its standard Minor fan fracture and shear off, burying itself in the chassis leg not 1/8" from the brake line, I would urge caution to be used. This fan had been cut (very neatly actually), and spaced out with thin washers, over time preusumably due to vibration/stress it had fractured through the bolt holes. Quite nauseating to think that there had been several people glancing over it all morning previously, to cure a misfire.
