Fuel Pump problem?

Hi folks,
I just rebuilt a spare SU fuel pump and though I haven't tested it with fuel yet, it seems that connecting it to a battery it is blowing air out of both the outlet AND inlet pipes. I thought the inlet pipe should suck, not blow! Did I do anything wrong??
Thanks.

Did you put oneway valves in correctly, is there some dirt under one of the
valves, try pumping fuel from one container to the next may work properly, cant remember if I tried my pump before fitting after refurb

At least it's pumping! As above - it may be fine when pumping fuel - or indeed perhaps a valve in upside down....

Hmmm thank you for your replies. I think the valves are fine - the inlet valve unseats when blowing, and seats when sucking. And the outlet valve does the reverse. I will have to test with some fuel from a container next time I go to get petrol, unless anyone has other ideas. It might just work OK when there is actual fuel in the pump..............

Sounds like the valves are wrong way round then - surely??

Well from what you say isn't that what should happen

blowing on the inlet valve opens, sucking closes, outlet .. sucking opens .blowing closes

Just fit it and see ,it only takes 5mins.I'm not sure that there would be enough air flow to get the valves working,so it may be that air will blow out of both holes. Its designed to pump fluid.

Oh I see - mouth to pump respiration..... Well in that case - yes they would be correct.

Hi folks,
Thanks for all your replies and, having tested it on actual fuel now, it does work fine, so all is well.
