Hi,
One thing I was made aware of, when asking questions on this topic in the past, is that if your car was originally fitted with a gold (or bronze) speedo then the petrol tank sender unit is not compatible with a black one.
Personally I'd send it back and ask for the one you want or a refund, gold ones are available, try eBay, you just need to check that the speedo reads to the same as your one did, as I believe early ones were only marked to 80 mph.
Does the petrol gauge work on the one you have? If so remove it and keep it, I found they can go wrong and it's always good to have a spare!
My car is from 1963 and was marked up to 90...................... very optimistic those Morris engineers!!
Best wishes,
Mike.

If the brackets are slightly different - it probably came from a Mini. They are easily tweaked to shape - but as above - the gauge won't work. Is the tpm correct - same as the bronze one?

The new speedo needs to have the same TPM as the old one, 1504 for 948, 1408 for 1098

You just use the 4.22 speedo (1408 although I think some have 1392 tpm - even better! ) - it will read more or less accurately on a 3.9 final drive - rather than high as it does on the 4.22. I have a 1294 with my 3.7 drive - it's dead accurate on speed and miles with 155 tyres.

As Roy says, keep the 1408. It overreads on the 4.22 diff but is within 1 mph on a 3.9 diff which is what I am running on my Traveller
