We got into this a while back when I was putting a Sprite engine in a Minor. The thread ought to cover most of your questions:

10D or 10DD 1098cc engines were only fitted to the Austin A40 Mk 2 in 1962.
The 10D or 10DD engines were not fitted to Midgets or Sprites so it looks like the engine fitted has been replaced at some time in the past.
Only the 10CC series of engines had the 2" mains. All other MG/Sprite 1098cc engines were prefixed 10CG.
See http://www.mgexp.com/article/mgenginehistory.html for full details.

And yet strangely the 9CG engine was the later/better version of the 948 fitted to Sprite MkiI and Midget MK i.

So if I want a 1098 engine the one with the 2" main caps and better crank is the 10cc engine I need?
