Correct oil capacity 1098cc Minor engine

Hi All,
Can anyone confirm the correct oil fill capacity (after sump drain and filter replacement) for a 1098cc Minor engine?
I have checked various sources and as they say "a man with 2 clocks never knows the true time"! Some references say 6 pints (3.4l), another says 6.5 pints (3.7l) and the online Castrol / Penrite oil recommendations state 3.9 litres.
And before any of you say "check the dipstick", I have no way of knowing which is the original dipstick for the car. When rebuilding the engine from a pile of parts, I had 4 different dipstick to choose from!
So, what I have done is drained and replaced filter (after running in oil) and have currently added a measured 3.5l of oil @ ambient temp (20 deg C). I will then "adjust" the dipstick height to suit the correct oil level - BUT for this I need to know what it should be!!!
If any of you have a cast iron, absolutely accurate, as per the bible capacity please let me know!

BTW, I was shocked to find that my company (BMW Group New Zealand) had Castrol Classic oil in stock in our warehouse! May be old stock, but I get it a cost AND it comes in a cool tin!

Many thanks
Lance

Hi. The original BMC Drivers Handbook that came with my 1966 Traveller (1098cc 10MA engine) gives "Engine Sump 6 1/2 pints (3.69 litres) (including filter)". Hope this helps.

5l I think - suspiciously similar to the ones you can get a Wilko for £16

Thanks all - yes its a 5 litre can.
I'll put another 200ml in to get it to 3.7 and will set the dipstick height to match - job done!

Is it different with a spin-on filter?

When you have the correct amount in, why don't you try all 4 dipsticks and see which one shows full, which would indicating the right one to use?

i just fill it to the full mark about 3.5 litres and just add a bit more till its full , you get to know after a while , just dont over fill , that can do more harm than good

He doesn't know where the full mark should be! Hence his question.

Run the engine, let the oil circulate, switch off, wait, and check again. :D

Reminds me of the old 70's show "The Dukes of Hazzard" - "Enus you DIPSTICK!!!"

Measure your dipstick with another one from a fellow Minor owners engine
