oil light

hi guys
I have just fitted a alternator kit
and as per instruction's removed the indicated wires from the control box
but now the oil light doesn't light up(the ignition light works ie lights up with key and goes out once started )
is the oil light connected to the control box?

The oil light switch isn't connected to the regulator box, you may have just knocked the connection off the switch.

No - but perhaps the lights are swapped over ??? To test - pull the wire off the oil pressure switch - is the light you have (which you think is Ignition) still working? However if the alt has been corrected wired - both Ign and Oil lights should still be working.

the bulbs in the speedo for the oil light and ign light hadn't been moved
all I did was fit the alternator and remove the wires from the regulator as instructed
and fit the wires from the alternator kit(loom with 3 wires, 2 brown to the starter solenoid
and yellow/green wire for the ign light)
poss break in the oil switch wire? or oil switch knackered?

I don't doubt YOU haven't moved the bulbs...but over the previous 50 years ???? You wouldn't notice in normal use - start up and both lights go out - all perfectly correct...apparently. Test it as I suggested earlier...

please accept my humble apologizes
I just took off the oil switch wire and surprise surprise the ign light did light up
so the bulb had been swapped over at some time
so now it's the ign light I have to sort out

It was too big a co-incidence that changing to alternator caused the oil light to give problems. So now - is the alternator actually charging your battery ? You need to check with a voltmeter.

well as it happens
I have checked the battery while the engine is running and it seems that when i rev the motor the battery voltage doesn't increase
so I think the alternator is not charging the battery and it possible that the ign light lead(from the alternator) is also is faulty
which would explain the lack of ign light

What reading are you getting with the engine running?

Don't forget to test the bulb, regardless of the wiring.

Can you confirm you have a yellow/green for ign light, as in my conversion it had a brown/yellow that connected to the brown/yellow removed from the control box, there may be different coloures used for different kits.

i removed the wires as instructions
the wires on the regulator read from the right looking at the reg were E- black(4 wires), D- yellow(2 wires which I assume were connected to the old dynamo) and F- yellow/green
and as for the bulb it's ok
and as for the battery voltage was about 12.5v ish while revving the engine

Whose 'instructions' ? Have you followed the alternator wiring diagram at the top of the electrical section???

black left as is
yellow disconnected and taped over
and the yellow/green I assume was for ign light

The kit should have a wire to connect to the ignition light circuit you disconnected from the regulator, alternatively the wiring diagram is here.

yeah I bought a kit with a loom
with 2 brown wire that go to the solenoid and a brown /yellow wire
which goes to the ign light(which I put to the yellow/green wire off the reg)

The brown wire needs to connect to the battery side of the solenoid... and the small wire connects to the thinner wire you removed from the D terminal - not to the 'field' wire.... See the diagram at the top of this section !!!!
