I am trying to trace the history of my recently acquired Morris but the DVLA tell me they cannot find any information about my car earlier than 1983 - they have no records for my vehicle earlier than this date. Can anyone give me any information about the ownership of my vehicle between 1965 and 1983, or point me in the right direction ?

Send the form off again, you will get another person looking at it who might do a better job. It's all down to luck with the DVLA when requesting historic data. They will have it, it's just how bothered they can be to help.

SN is a Dundee area tag for pre-2001. If you can get to Dundee Archives they should have details of ownership up to centralisation at Swansea in about 1973. You could e-mail them archives_at_dundeecity.gov.uk

DVLA say they have no record of the Volvo I bought recently with no V5.It was imported from the Volvo factory in Gothenberg in Sweden into UK when built in 1972 and used here until the early 1990s.It was then placed into storage until recently when I bought it,the V5 had been mislaid and there is no old tax disc in the windscreen.So apart from the UK reg number,the fact that its RHD and the build date and details I obtained from the Volvo archivist I cannot PROVE its a UK car.They recently returned my V5 application and £55 cheque saying I have to contact HMRC as they reckon its subject to VAT as an imported car!!!!!!!!

Dealing with DVLA can be a nightmare - especially since they closed the "local" offices forcing you to deal with the central bureaucracy over the phone - many of who don't seem to have the first clue about what they are doing.

A colleague of mine has a Mazda Bongo that was imported by a previous owner but never registered in the UK. The paperwork has been bouncing between here and Swansea for most of the year, and still the vehicle lacks a VRN. I believe the MOT is now about 6 months old and yet the vehicle has yet to turn a when on a UK highway under its own power.

Yes regarding local office closures.I found from the reg which Leeds dealer registered and sold it from new.The dealer has long gone out of business.Obviously the dealer and local office would have details but the dealers gone now and so have the records once they went back to DVLA Swansea.The second time they sent my application back and told me to contact HMRC about the NOVA(notification of vehicle arrival)they also said they wanted an MOT.They can whistle!Been stood 20+ years its gonna need much more than £30 for a ticket to end up stood until something gets sorted out.Not acceptable I appreciate, the messing about your mates' had but the car hasn't been registered over here ever.Mine was registered(and no doubt some kind of tax levied on it when imported)in 1972 and they're asking for it again!!!DVLA lost its record.DVLA should put it right and at no expense to me save the cost of a new V5.
Does anybody know if they have some sort of ombudsman?Someone with a couple of brain cells maybe?

I very much doubt there's an ombudsman for what is an 'Executive Agency' of HM's Government. They have the full authority of the government to do whatever they like..... And they do just that.

D'ya want me to have a go at this - cannot understand what the blinkin' problem is?

Surely Volvo would be able to confirm the importation of the car when new?

The problem with the DVLA is that it seems to be increasingly a profit centre raising money by fees and fines, its a shame we can fee and fine it when it gets things radically wrong - like here
