Hi all. I posted a message back in September requesting help registering a genuine convertible that has been off the road for many years,It was given up for dead, scrap or spares only. it was used for several years by a wealthy gent to drive around his massive estate. I bought the car over a year ago with no V5,number plates, No chassis number stamped into the floor or bulkhead[both badly repaired resulting in lost numbers]. The only numbers I have are the gearbox number and the numbers stamped into the thin plate high up on the engine bulkhead [Passenger side] I have filled in various details on a v55/5 form and now I believe I need help from a club member to verify the cars authenticity. I have just become a club member and would appreciate some assistance, Many thanks.

Have you contacted BMIHT for the chassis number BASED on the body number?

DVLA accept 3 unit matches without a chassis number - so try for the the rear
axle and key numbers too.

The more evidence you can provide, the better - Rob will help you with this.

I presume you've searched for tax discs, documentation etc.

It's either 1967/68 - after 10/65 for obvious reasons.

After three months of trying to get a v5 for a 1972 volvo p1800 thats been stored for 25 years during which time DVLA lost all their records, and sending all necessary forms,£55 cheque etc and having them all returned........TWICE!!!!!!! I have concluded they are a bunch of morons.I have given up and will send the car to auction to give someone with more patience a challenge.Wish I could have found a phone an official there to complain to.Admittedly somewhere along the line the V5 was lost but thats a bit of paper, the RECORD of the v5 was in the care of the DVLA and they lost it.Why should a new owner be given the responsibility of putting their incompetence right?Load of idiots.

It is advisable to photocopy anything you send to the DVLA as this issue seems pretty common.

Thanks POMMreg. Any help would be appreciated. The body plate numbers on the thin strip plate on the upper N/S bulkhead, Z [I THINK IT IS A Z?] 32511 T41533 is the only I/D on the car apart from the gearbox number 162627. Engine is not original, the number on the diff has long gone due to corrosion, not being ground off. I have no old paperwork or tax discs. I still have the original door locks but as the car came with no keys I changed them along with the ignition switch. I have filled in the V55/5 form with as much info as I have but many of the details would have to come from the certificate of conformance form for the Minor. Is a cory of this available to club members?
Thanks Steve.

You really need 3 id "matches" if NO chassis stamp - do you know where the axle number is stamped?

Contact BMIHT - get a certificate based on the body number.

Complete the form - photocopy it first - sent pics of the body plate, gearbox number and (hopefully)
rear axle number stamps and you should be okay.

If not on the PNC system, you'll either have a age related regn issued, or if you want to go all "Columbo",
trawl through mountains of lists.

Mick

What is the problem with your Volvo?

Refused on what grounds?

First refusal because as I had no old v5 or tax disc I couldnt keep the original MNW295L number this after I told them an age related would do.Even though my phone number was on the application they thought it better to send everything back with a covering letter saying if I wasnt bothered about the number to return everything(another £2.50 recorded)and reapply.
Second refusal because as they had no records(car was on their records from 1972 until the early nineties but they lost them) I need an MOT and to contact HMRC as it was liable for VAT(which wasnt introduced until a year after the car was built).
The MOT and VAT are requisites for vehicles recently imported, this car was imported from new and used over here for its first 20 odd years but without a v5 or old tax disc I can't PROVE it.
They've p****d me off so much with their crass stupidity that I am now just going to move it on.Someone with more patience and a liking for playing mind games with bottom feeders might enjoy the process.I would just like the chance to make a complaint to a department at DVLA that deals with irate customers but they probably don't have one.

I am sure the Axle number is stamped on the N/S driveshaft tube on the front side by the spring attachments. Deffo nothing there. Contacting BMIHT is my next step. I Was hoping to get this sorted by Christmas...................next year!!

Thanks again.. How could two numbers on the strip be so far out as it is a 1 piece strip and looks untampered with? I have tried to upload a few pictures but no luck..I will try again when I feel more tecno minded!!!! [Could be a long time]. Re your Volvo woes Tyson....I have registered 2 very old vehicles in the past both with lost ID'S although both had histories to help the process.
What made things much easier was the fact that I lived a walk away from My local DVLA licencing office, all of which were shut down to "help make the process more efficient working from 1 base in Swansea" Well we all knew that was BULLS**T so why didn't they. It makes all the difference talking to a face who cant fob you off with a letter or E-mail. Stick with it if you can as I have owned 2 P1800's and really enjoyed driving them. They were as reliable as a modern car and never let me down. If only the DVLA could say the same for their staff!! Hopefully the gearbox number will help. Steve.

An update on the Registration saga. My mistake on the body number. Its actually 71533, not 41533 as previously stated hence the confusion on manufacture date. I have been speaking to a very helpful Derek Tew at BMIHT.who says with the body number and gearbox number they may be able to source the chassis number and maybe more details. I am forwarding on details and certificate fee which he states will be refunded if they are not successful. Fingers crossed.
