Have had this 64 Traveller for over 25 years and in the last few years it has been off the road and I've been slowly sorting her out. She starts first time from cold and ticks over very nicely. I can drive about but for only about ten minutes then it dies and will not start. I'm at a loss now. Have checked fuel line and drained the tank twice; left the filler cap off in case of vacuum; replaced points, condenser, petrol pump, coil, leads, plugs, even distributor; reset static timing; cleaned carb. Has anyone any idea what could be the problem. Engine is a 1275 midget which has been in the car and run perfectly for years. It has a single HIF carb. I need to be able to get it running so I can go for an MOT and see what else needs to be done to the chassis in terms of welding but I just can't get there! After about half an hour she will start again. it must be heat related I think, but I can't think what? Any help most welcome.

Sounds like either the spark or the fuel is absent after it gets hot, both are easy to establish. With the spark, just hold a lead near the block or better still use one of those plastic adapters with a bulb inside to connect between plug and HT lead.

If this reveals a spark is present then the fuel,is missing, simple!

Once you know which it is, report back for more detailed assistance.

This might sound strange, but what's it like starting from cold, does it start easily or does it start when you let go of the key?

Have you cleaned that carb out? Checked for crap in there?

Have you tried cranking with the handle when it won't go?

Well I know its,NEVER THE COIL,(Roys away at the moment ) but the fault is the classic sign of a coil breaking down under heat,I would (Assuming you have the old coil) take it for a run,when it stops stick the old coil on and see if it starts. Then you know for sure that sometimes it is THE COIL.The coils available at the moment are very poor quality so the new one you have fitted may be the cause.Worth a try.

There was a recent thread where a similar fault was eventually traced to a faulty condenser, worth a look.

It's NEVER EVER the coil ! Breaking down... It WILL be the condenser....... Just because there's no Internet in Tenerife (so my dear wife assures me...) you all think you can run riot and buy new coils !!!!!!
