Go onto the potteries' site, this gives chassis(or vin) production by year.

thanks, I've done that. best i can find says it's a 1968 traveller, which gives me a trafalger blue with a 1098 motor. we have different rego plates for pre 68 and post 68, i'm trying to get the result close enough to be able to say before july or july and after. pre july 68 gets a black plate with white letters, post july a white plate with black letters. a bit stupid and anal but given the cost of personal retro plates i would like to get it correct.i may have to spend the money at the british motor heritage trust and ask for the certificate from them, pricey though

Pm the details and I can tell you what month - £45 IS a bit steep!

Calculating from the chassis info I have, I reckon your car is August 68, or maybe a month either side, so you are very close to the June/July split. I haven't a beginning of the year figure for 1968 but I calculate end of June '68 chassis numbers to be around 1223000. Traveller build chassis number start for Jan 69 was 1241052.
Addition
The only definitive info that supports the above is that at July 1968 chassis number 1227264 'Peat Brown' paint was discontinued as a traveller colour.

the log book of my moggy tells me the date first registered.....day, month, year
and if i look on the wiper motor it confirms it was fitted the month before registration (build date stamped on), also if you look on the voltage regulator there should be a build date stamped on there too.......

You can also look at the glass, and decipher the Triplex code stamped on it:

thanks guys, you leave no stone unturned in ways to get a date. looks like you got it too, everything points at late august 68 so it's got the right plates on it now for western australia, black letters on a white plate.
thanks again

Glad you got it sorted.
I hope you are having a Hot, Happy, Healthy, and Indulgent Christmas and New Year there.
Just at the moment, the 'Hot is definitely missing here in the UK, given our wonderful weather!
