rubber seal between gearbox cover and floor

Hi all,

I know these are sold by ESM and Bull Motif etc, but is there a more readily available high street alternative?

I need to replace mine asap (had removed, cleaned and repainted cover, but seals didn't survive and Monty is getting very damp inside with gaping hole in the floor!).....so ideally want to pop to the shops and buy something this weekend, rather than wait for delivery (and pay P&P on a single item!).

Any suggestions pls? :D

Thanks

Matt

There isn't a seal as such between the gearbox cover and the floor, usually just a mastic type compound. Do you mean the gaiter around the gearstick, held in place by a squareish metal collar, itself retained by screws into the cover? If so, then it is very much a specialist Minor item, and you will have to go the the normal suppliers - add Tom Roy, David Manners, Moss, Ware, etc to your list. I have seen people try to use a rubber sheet, but it does not usually give the flexibility needed to move the stick, and simply rips after a short period of use. Gaiters from other cars can be made to fit (but not particularly well), and a trip to a scrap yard may be your answer - but how much will you spend in petrol and time as opposed to the P&P?

Hi,
I have used self adheisive Neoprene Strip, http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_ ... Caps%2C142
I used 20mm wide by 3mm thick and trimmed it as needed, also used it on the M/C cover. It has stood up to the job but then again its not often you need to remove the gearbox tunnel :D
Not sure about getting it locally though?

There are indeed 4 rubber strips, between the floor and cover, they are approximately 3/4'' wide x 3/8''thick and 12'' or so long. If original floors are still there, you will find a recess in them to accommodate these rubber strips. the mastic stuff is used around the outside edges of the cover. Replacement floors don't feature this recess. (now there's a surprise) Don't know where you would find something other than a dealer.

I put 'Self Adhesive foam strip' into the search on eBay and this came up

Plenty of other alternatives on there too :)

You need to be sure that sort of material doesn't absorb water though.

I had a similar issue and tried some butyl seal designed for window units. It did seal but being a rubber it tried to twist in the screw treads when putting the panel back. In the end I bought a 3M product 08568 from Europart which was cheaper than ESM. It really is good but 60 strips will cost you about £25. Ideal for cauking wings and other panels in position.

The original rubber has pre punched holes in the appropriate places, to clear the screws. The rubber needs to be about 3/8;; thick, to seal properly. You can get rubber sheet around 5mm thick, and then cut into strips glued together to give the correct thickness, maybe that would solve the problem, although I think I would go for the esm option if they met the original spec. Order before 3 tomorrow and you'll get it Friday!

Mmm, all food for thought. It does sound like original is the way to go.

Thanks for all your replies.
