Not charging

Post by Heronwood »

Hi All,

My recent purchase of a series II 1954 generally ok but i have the following problem:

Not charging red light stays on:

i. Changed dynamo (second hand from car that was pos earth so same polarity)

ii. Red light still on but gets brighter the more you rev the engine!

iii. Changed control box (second hand as above).

iv. Made no difference, red light stays on and gets brighter the more you rev!!

Any suggestions please??

You need to check that there is output from the Dynamo, if there is, then check for voltage at the regulator, with the ignition light glowing brighter it does sound as though there is output from the Dynamo but you need to know how many volts it is giving out. It should put out between 15-20 volts.
Do you have a workshop manual? The Dynamo section describes how to check the charging circuit at the various points.

Sorted!!!

The dynamo I was given turned out to be from a negative earth car which is why the the ignition light glows brighter when given more revs.also the dynamo was showing a negative charge on a meter

I also changed the regulator for a new one.

I rang Bul-Motif and spoke to Stuart who guided me how to (flash) the dynamo so it became positive, the whole thing took 20 mins, started her up ignition light flickered and went out with a small rev!!!

So helpful…..
