I have puchaced a spin-on oil filter kit but am unable to move one of the old studs. I have tried using two nuts together but it still will not shift. Any ideas
thanks

Borrow some Stiltsons or similar type pliers which have teeth which
grip harder the more you apply pressure. The stud has got to give
eventually. You could also apply heat CAREFULLY.

Also tapping the end with a hammer may jarr it into moving.

Also sometimes you can free it by tightening it first.
Does that make sense?

Certainly does Pete!
Also I have used cheap mole grips with a jagged serrated section for gripping and biting into the stud.
This method usually works when the '2 nuts' method won't.
BUT if THAT fails, then weld a bolt or setscrew to the end of it, put a ring spanner on it and tap it round to 'shock' it when undoing.

Why not get the proper tool?
Surely they can't be too expensive in the UK & you'll be sure to use it elsewhere.

If access is a bit tight, then there are other types around now. The one above is the type I use & it's very useful.

or weld a blob on the side of the shank - this stops the molegrips from spinning round - works everytime, although if it is well stuk, don't be surprised if it shears off flush with the block
If that happens, weld a lump in the middle of the stud and fit a hex nut over the lump and weld it on through the hole in the middle of the nut. The heating and cooling seems to help a lot and I've removed quite a few sheared studs/bolts that way without any problems.

And dont forget to soak it with some Plus Gas penetrating oil beforehand.

Hello all,
just a point using two nuts, tighten them as tightly as possible in the above situation, I'd be very surprised if that is not sufficient to shift a tight stud. Block studs do not usually rust
