Just shopped around for my insurance as the last one hiked it up a bit too much for my liking after changing from FJ the year before [changed for the same reason

] . And found that Swinton came out as £83 fully comp. £100 excess , salvage retention, £60 excess on the windscreen and legal cover and with £50 cash back works out to a paltry £33 a year's insurance cover, not bad me thinks seeing as the rest came in at from £95 - £113.

I think you need to keep the insurance running for 3 months then you receive a cheque. Something like that!

On the Swinton website it just states "swap your car insurance to us and receive £50 cash back" and yes as previously mentioned I get a cheque for £50 in 3 months time .I did this early this year with my Royal Enfield bullet motorbike and true to their word I got a cheque for £30 after 3 months so a quote of £74 for my bike actually cost me £44.Bargain me thinks as I've paid just £44 pounds for a years fully comp for my bike and just £33 for my Minor Tourer. go get it guys!

Is this 'classic car' insurance with agreed value, or 'everyday' car insurance? That can make a BIG difference. What's to stop them from only giving you £100 in the event of a total loss, as the car is 50 years old "and not worth anything" ?

What is the market value of a Minor in reasonable condition, if insured on a 'normal; policy, and a total loss claim is made, how would that be worked out?

I don't know, but I've heard enough stories of folk using everyday car insurance and ending up with peanuts when the worse happens. There's a reason for classic car insurance with agreed value, and due to the nature of it being classed as a cherished classic, the insurance company is a tad more understanding/forgiving. I have my 2CV insured with Footman James with an agreed value of £6000, with UK and European breakdown cover as standard, unlimited annual mileage, and quite a few other 'perks' thrown in for £140pa. I'm more than happy to pay that amount given the fact that to cover the car for European breakdown alone is around £100+ for one weeks cover through the RAC. And that's with RAC membership discount!! I can travel on the continent whenever I like and know I have breakdown cover if needed (I've yet to use it, but been told FJ are very good).

It's a proper classic car insurance with agreed value so I get what the car is worth if it's a total loss I made sure of that .

Just make sure you have an "Agreed Value" on paper, as an assessor after an accident may not put a very high price on your car! If your Minor actually is a just run around, without much sentimental or financial worth, then these deals are brilliant! Thankfully mine had an agreed value when it was written off, but bear in mind I did have the right to retain the salvage, which did cost over £1,000 to keep! So by the time I paid the restorer, and with lots of other work I put in, I could have purchased another traveller more cheaply.

I don't really know how the salvage costs are worked out - presumably there's some sort of formula. I was informed that it would cost me £168 to retain the salvage of my Minor van when I had an accident a few years ago. Obviously I did and it was a pretty straight forward rebuild, but how they got to £168 is beyond me...
