Engine stabalizer bar

I see these regularly come up for sale on ebay. My early Series II car doesn't have one. I'm not sure exactly when they were introduced, but I've often wondered what was the reason for their addition? What problem was BMC trying to solve by adding this stabalizer bar?

It was introduced to solve the problem of clutch judder. Though it hasn't help mine !!!

Introduced as stated above as an attempt by BMC to remove clutch judder under Pt No: AJA5054.
The main problem was that the battery box support was not up to it and invariably it resulted in the battery box support cracking.
To overcome the cracking problem Grumpy introduced his engine steady kit which utilised the two spare damper mounting holes. I had one of the Grumpy's steady kits on my Ser 2 and it worked very well.[frame]

Fitted a Grumpy bar to Jethro and it stopped the engine flexing under load and eliminated clutch judder - recommended!
