Oil flow

Which way does the oil flow through the filter, through the feed pipe to the filter or from the filter housing?
The 'dirty' oil enters the filter through the external pipe, passes through the filter (outside to inside) and exits up through the centre of the filter housing into the main oil gallery in the block.
