Since sitting in the garage from 1988 my new little car 'Tommy' saw daylight for the first time in 26 years. Very impressed that the tyres went up and stayed up and that he rolled out wonderfully.

He is now down at Chertsey Minors getting a sorted so as to pass an MOT, after advice from some lovely people on here I am trying to keep as original as possible, hoping the engine can be sorted. The only thing I am having added at the moment are seatbelts and a servo for the brakes.

Seeing how much all the mechanics cost me before I look at the body work, but I will post pic's up here as the work progresses if there is any interest.

As much as I would love to do it all myself, the fact is that as a kid I never even finished an airfix model so their is zero chance of me finishing a car!

At some stage in the re-commissioning may I suggest that Tommy gets some new tyres.After 26 years they are well past their
"sell by date ".It's a serious safety issue ....the rubber will be perished and deformed, an imminent blow out awaits, if they are not replaced.

I hope the car is soon back on the road for you.The guys and gals on the Forum simply love pictures , so on their behalf if I'm not being too presumptuous, YES please.

MOT testers now have to advise you if your tyres are older than 3 years when you have your test. There's a 4 digit code on tyres, 2 for week number and 2 for year. 26 year old tyres might be an eye opener for them Anything made of rubber will probably be worth replacing for peace of mind. Mostly engine hoses and brake seals.

From your photos the bodywork looks in very good condition so you should be off to a good start

Thanks for the replies, I didn't say in the original post as I didn't know if anyone would bother reading this. But I am getting a full new braking system, everything replaced and yes new tyres! I want the car to be fully safe and mechanically / electrically before I drive anywhere in it. I have what I hope is a fair budget to get this done so fingers crossed.

Good luck with it! A servo is really not necessary with the standard brakes.....but it's your car and your choice ! It would be much better to upgrade to the later/larger 8" front drums.....if it's not too late I suggest you specify this when they are doing the 'new' brakes...

Off to cherstey? will be in good hands just make sure you are all aware of jobs required. with mine after rebulit a car to allmost pristine condtion relised we had overlooked a fairly life expired chassis leg that now has to be done!
