Morris Minor Owners Club

Hi, new to this club.
We own two Morris Minors: a low light & a MM1000
The Low light was ordered by my wife's grand-father & paid for in 1949 & it arrived in Perth Australia in April 1950.
The car has travelled only 68000 miles & is in perfect original condition. We aquired it in 1967 upon the grand-fathers death,a one owner car!
There has been some discussions about numbers etc & I was hoping somebody could help decipher them correctly.
The Low Light.
Type: MNR/s
Car number: SMM/58873
Engine number: 59552
On the plate attached to the sub frame under the battery behind the engine
Z10427/8 NMP ?35649 the ? indicates that whatever was stamped is not readable
The car is a two door saloon.

My Morris minor 1000 was bought by me second hand in 1963, it has travelled over 368000miles including towing a camper trailer across Australia.

One site said the MM1000 was a 1958 but it was first registered in1961 & has all the body details of a 1960 e.g. glove box lids.
Under the rear seat it had "made in Nottingham" & the clutch linkage was of the UK type as against other Australian models I have seen.
It does not have a heater, they were not fitted to Australian cars.
Any info on the above cars would be great.

MNR was the model/type code used on all SMM Morris Minors up to mid 1952.s = paint type (synobel)

F = Morris Minor, B = 2 door. There should be a 3rd letter identifying the colour, A = black
5 = RHD CKD (Locally assembled),1 = paint type (synthetic)
880734 = chassis no. (1959-60) 7108021 ?


Engine 9M =900cc, Morris, U = centre gear change, H = high compression, 380070 = engine no.

Sounds like a Cowley boo-boo on the NMP plate if the "T" has
been stamped out - any chance of the Cowley body number?.

As Mike says,although; should read...8/807347/08021

8/ = 1960
807347 = UK chassis no.
08021 = Aussie build number - should also be stamped into the firewall
near the Compliance plate.

If it WAS 1958, Aussie 2dr build nos. were c.03000-05200

Mike thanks for your info, the results for the MM1000 were as I thought but as for the Low Light I am still learning. You asked for the Cowley number stamped into the bulkhead, I cannot find one but there is a number on a small plate screwed to the top of the passenger side bulkhead it reads BM-34633, I had never noticed it before, is this what you requested?

The 1960 should have the Aussie build stamp.

UK chassis stamp of the SMM will be behind the o/s/f shock.absorber - might
be lucky enough to see the last digit, but probably not.

The Nuffield body numbering system is pretty easy!
