Quite a few do it Roy and some supermarkets refuse your card if you don't use the banks they deal with {TESCO]

If they refuse my card that's fine - I would walk away and leave them with the shopping... There is no warning about a 'card check fee' - never happened before - just suddenly appeared when my wife used her Clydesdale Bank card...3 times..before it appeared on her statement. I don't yet know if the charge is from Asda - or from CB.

That's great customer service.

Your giving them money not taking it out. Would they charge £1 if you bought in the store?
I wouldn't think your bank is any less trustworthy than their "preferred" banks.

If it was not advertised and authorised by you (or your wife), then it is not a valid transaction. Complain to the card issuer and have the transaction(s) put in dispute.

Indeed we will - my wife is ex CB employee - it's a 'staff' account ! Putting this out as a warning to others - in case the charge goes unnoticed.

Found on another site after a quick google :
The £1 is an authorisation check. A lot of places do it... Tesco etc, they put through a £1 charge to check your card is ok. Itll show as pending in your account as an authorisation but it wont actually come off

Thanks - we've yet to get the monthly statement to check on this..
Edit - the Statement has now been seen - and the strange £1 charges have melted away.... Phewww ! Thanks for the inputs. What a strange way to operate ??

Fuel is a rotten swindle just now ! Oil has fallen from ~120 to ~80 ($ per barrel) and ok the pound has changed slightly against the dollar - but it's still down ~ 1/3 of what it was.. Yet fuel has only dropped maybe 10p/litre ???

Ah the good old Rocket n feather huh?
Prices rise as soon as any upward shift in oil is announced but fall so painfully slowly even when the bottom drops out of the market, aided and abetted by a greedy Government whose rip off taxes are predicated on the cost of fuel (and on the tax already charged,) and thus they secretly hate to see the price fall as that lessens the tax grab from our shrunken incomes.
Us ordinary working people exist only to be screwed over by big business and politics. The only time that we become an issue is when they want your vote to secure their place at the trough - because we are all in this austerity thing together of course

Democracy is decided by the amount you can pay to get things rigged your way..
Cynical? You better believe it.

The fuel tax is fixed per litre, BUT the Vat is levied on the whole amount (including the tax....which I have often wondered about..) and so the 'slightly' falling price of petrol and diesel will be reducing the vat 'take' - unless of course the lower price encourages people to use their cars more ! Wouldn't be surprised to see a bit more tax added - except - there's an election looming!!!
