Speedo's AGAIN ..

Sorry start on this again but I'm now even more confused ...

THIS is the speedo in mirium (Plastic switch is temporary) .. The light on the "50" is green .. The back looks like it's been seriously modified.

The ring around it has been modified with a file to make it fit.

Image

I've been given five moggie speedo's. All badly stored and rusty, However one of them .. looks like this ..

Image

The back is apparently exactly the same as a Moggie one ..

Does anyone know what Moggie this would be fitted to ?

Also does anyone know the significance of the stick on number on the speedo and fuel guage ? Is this just an inspection number ?

Does anyone know how to decode the serial number ?

\There will be a serial number on the face of the speedo beginning
with SN..... Give us that number and we can identify it.

Justin........ if all the speedos you have have the green lamp above the '50' then they are MINI speedos and will be calibrated for a Mini (I have a few). The late Moggy ones are exactly the same except they don't have the green lamp next to the '50'. Like this:

The other important number, separated form the SN, is directly under the 1/10 mile display and is the turns/mile calibration. For a 1098cc engine & gearbox with 4.22:1 differential this should be 1408. It can be just made out on Cam's pic.

Just in case you cant see it fully in the picture it is SN-4423/04 and where the green lamp is in the mini speedo the Moggie has its voltage stabiliser fitted, so it should appear different at the back to the mini one.

JUSTIN...can only say that that SN4421/115sa is NOT a Minor speedo.

Now that is CLEVER !

I was about to photograph the back the speedo I showed you before to show it was a moggie one (with the Voltage regulator in the correct place etc ..) when I noticed that the rim was bent slightly differently to the other speedo's I have ..

This is a mini speedo that as my daughter would say "A SOMEBODY" has rebuilt with a morris minor back to it ...

The explaination of the numbers makes so much sense ! Thankyou so much !

SO assuming that my Minor is stock a 1969 minor 1000 2 door saloon should have a 4.22:1 diff on so it should be a 1408 turns per mile whereas the currently fitted one is 1376. Which by my calculation means that it's overreading by 2% which holds no speed camera traumas but does mean that the mileage is 2% above what it should be .. Which lets face it is a really big worry on a car that has had several engines is 35 years old and has had at least one speedo change. To think I'll never know the true mileage ..

Out of interest what is the 1504 used for ?

Justin,
It's not really 100% important that the Minor speedos are rusty on the outside. What are they like on the INSIDE?

Carefully take one of the minor speedos apart. If the internals are okay (drag cup, needle, spring, cogs) then you can simply take the internal bits out and put them in your shiny mini speedo. In fact, that's nearly what I did with my speedo (except I took it apart to take replace the blank central part of the speedo with a km/hr insert and to recalibrate it)... I pinched some of the non rusty and non speedo reading affecting components from the mini one and put in the minor one :) - so you could do the reverse!
:)

1504 is marked on the speedometer fitted to my saloon with 4.55:1 differential. If that's the number you mean.

Well thats much easier said than done.

It is quite straightforward but an important bit to remember before taking off the needle, which has to be done to remove the mechanism, is carefully lift it over the zero stop and note where it comes to rest. This is the position in which it has to be refitted to read correctly once moved back over the stop.

Forgot to add that my 1504 speedometer is bronze (early '62) with the original 4.55:1 differential. Not changed it to 4.22:1 (as should be on Justinminors '69 car) because the oil filler is incorporated on the differential body and the axle casing only has drain at bottom. Therefore to change would need later axle casing with oil filler. And if it's working don't fix it!

Like Kevin says it should be EXACTLY the same as mine. My car started life as a 1969 1098cc saloon with a 4.22:1 diff
