REPLACING TOP AND BOTTOM TRUNNIONS

Hello,

I've just got around to exchanging the top and bottom trunnions on both side of my Traveller, but the manuals I have are pretty sketchy on this subject, so I'm seeking advice.

According to the manual the top trunnions should be fully hand-tightened and then turned back one revolution, which is no problem at all. But what about the bottom trunnions? If I fully hand-tighten them they don't line up with the holes in the wishbone, so I'll need to either slacken them off slightly by approximately a quarter of a revolution, or tighten the living daylights out of them. I'm told that the bottom trunnions need to be quite tight, but how tight precisely?
Anyone who's done this job will no doubt have encountered the same problem. so any advise would be much appreciated.

As regards the bottom trunnion do it up fully on the swivel pin then back it off just enough to be able to fit the fit the trunnion pin through the bottom trunnion without it fouling on the swivel pin threads when the trunnion is turned through 90 degrees either way from its fitted position between the lower suspension arms.
The bottom trunnion as with the top trunnion cannot be fully screwed home as there has to be enough free turning movement in the threads to enable the swivel pin to turn.

Make sure the bottom threads on the Kingpin are in good condition. If they look very worn, i.e. "sharp" you may be better off replacing the Kingpin along with the trunnions. Or the joint could still fail!

Or if OK, just tighten the bottom trunnion fully by hand and as said above by Phil, then slacken off to allow full steering movement with the swivel pin in place.

Hi,

Thanks for the info. I'll give this a go tomorrow.
