Finally brave enough to try the new welder. A couple of hinges on an old gas bottle may have not been the best thing to try. but I have all my body parts intact, and my welding mask worked a treat.

That is truly terrible.... 'Must try harder'... Bit of a risk cutting into that gas bottle surely!!

Not really if you have emptied the gas, slowly released the value and then filled with water twice to push out any residual gas.

Yes truly terrible.. but not my trade so I'm not disheartened.

I wanted to make a stove from a gas bottle but was too scared to grind into it!

Had you got the top valve completely off? That way you know there is no gas.... and you get rid of any gas lurking by filling the hole with water, which pushes the rest of the gas out

Wouldn't have dared cut into it until I'd got the whole brass tap screwed from the bottle leaving a hole in the top.

Setting too low,no penetration.Turn the power up.

Its also very difficult to weld metal that thick with a diy/domestic welder. most just don't have the power output, to do so you need to grind the edges to make a V at the joint so that the weld fillet ,fills the V ,so allowing complete penetration on the joint.practice on thinner sheets,and look at the rear to see if the weld has shown,slightly on the reverse side,to indicate full penetration.But well done keep at it.

LOL Calor would have a job to go round all the lads on the migwelding forum that have made the stoves!Some beauties on there.Better knocking out heat in your garage than laying in a ditch.

My bottle wasn't calor and therefore three years ago when we tried to take it back they would not accept it - so has been sat outside since then.. so it has been recycled in a very environmentally friendly way.... and of course wood burning is cabon neutral, so I will now bask in the glory of my environmentalism

Although good practise, for welding cars you would be better with some nice clean 18 gauge steel. Get the hang of nice steel before you tackle the real stuff.

Bought a sheet of steel to practice on for exactly the reason you suggest. Reading as much as you can in the world is no substitute for doing something and having a go.
