OK - Ive decided. I'm going back to black! Ive got a lot of the flaky paint off.

Assume no undercoat is needed for the enamel coach paint Ive got?

BTW Whats the silver things at about 7 o clock on the wheel? I don't want to paint over them I assume?[frame]Image[/frame]

Those are the balance weights, it's up to you if you want to paint over them.
Regarding the paint I would rub down those rusty bits a little more or it will show through on the top coat.

Thanks.. Yes - def will rub down more.. Just wanted to have a go to see how bad they were.. and not that bad to be honest.

Cant really see a way of getting those weight things off, so will probably paint over.

they just knock off or prise with a screwdriver, but you may need to get them balanced after

If I can knock the off with a screwdriver can I push them back on post painting? Should be easy enough to mark where they came off from.

take them off they should be a quick tap on the spring part to put them back on.. be careful not to chip your new paint.. I had my wheel rebalnced after painting and they put the weight on the inside of the wheel

Thanks - Yes - knowing me I will scratch what Ive done putting them back on. In all seriousness though, I'm just trying initially to make things look a little less tired.

Decided t go bad to black wheels. Still deciding what colour for the grill. hmmmm???

Ha - The reason I bought this beast of a split screen is because I bought a lovely traveller a few months ago - but didn't want to attempt to mend stuff on that for fear of screwing up whats decent car.

This one runs, doesnt need an MOT - so easier to play with and mend without me worrying too much if first attempt, I get it wrong!

The list of things I need keeps growing New seat covers; old imperial type tools etc etc etc etc etc....

With respect I think in your position I would be taking it to the garage FOR an mot, looking at the condition of your doors,if it is any indication of the rest of the car then you may need to do more than tidy it up for you to use as a runaround.
I admire your trying to learn about the car but ultimately safety is your biggest concern with an old car.

Thanks... the doors aren't an indication as to the state of the rest of the car, and it has recently had some work by a professional mechanic who checked it over.

.... but I take your point.. and the car is booked in for a thorough check in a weeks time.

Very good idea. After all it's your safety that's the most important thing here not what the car looks like. Good luck.

Totally agree.. which is why i went for one that appeared to be fundamentally structurally pretty sound.... but lots of cosmetic issues... as I can mess around with the cosmetic things.. but not structural fundamental issues.
