Correct Carb for the Car

I have a 1970 Traveller. It has the engine no. 10V/189E/H43298

I've been trying to cure a rough tickover. It has a new distributor set up carefully, rocker clearances are set etc.

I'm thinking the source of the problem is the carburettor. so took off the carburettor and there's quite a bit of wear and play in the throttle spindle. The old worn carburettor's tag no. is AUD 368

I have a brand new HS2 carburettor I bought years ago which I thought I could fit but it's not quite the same. It's tag no. is AUD 13 and it doesn't have the small pipe at the side to take the rubber hose that comes off the tappet chest cover on the site of the engine via a "flame trap"

Can I repair a leaky throttle spindle. I see the rebuild kit from SU carb.co.uk includes "spindle and bushes"; are the bushes for the carb body?

Can I replace the old worn carb with the new carb in which case where do I fit the hose from the tappet chest cover?

you can use your new carb, connect the breather pipe to the air filter
tho your old one has the better breather

As above - it won't be quite as good for the 'breathing' - but will do nicely while you rebush the old carb - yes the kit will give you the parts to do that.

The AUD13 SU Carb is the correct carb for a 1098cc Minor 1962-1970.

See:-
http://sucarb.co.uk/cf/vehicle/list/?ma ... icle=Minor
If the link will nor work:-
Go SU page/
Vehicle search/
Find.

As regards fitting new spindle bushes unless you have the right equipment and technical capability/ability I would advise against attempting to renew the spindle bushes.
See:-
http://sucarb.co.uk/technical-carburett ... dle-bushes
If the link will not work:-
Go technical page/
Carb settings & Maintenance/
Spindle bushes.

Or - add a breather into the carburettor spacer.

I don't believe it's THAT difficult to bush the carb spindle. But I also don't think it matters all that much! Ok so there is a little bit of air entry at idle, and negligible effect when running - but what % of the total engine running 'revs' count are at idle ??

I agree it is not difficult to re-bush the carb body but to do it properly with the two bushes aligned is.
If the bushes are not aligned the throttle spindle could be stiff and the butterfly operation at best erratic.
You could end up with a carb that is only best for scrap.
If you want a spare carb there are plenty of S/H ones out there.

The SU with tag AUD368 was fitted to Austin/Morris 1100 (1098cc) Mk2/3 1971-1974 and possibly other vehicles as well.

A little bit of air seeping past the throttle spindle never did anyone any harm; just adjust the carb to compensate.
Now if you can see daylight past the throttle spindle - it is well past fitting new bushes. :D

Is it possible the AUD368 carb was fitted at the end of the production run? Looking at pictures of concourse engine bays from late type minors it does appear the breather hose goes to the side of the carb.

Doing a further search of the Burlen S.U. web site it appears that the Austin/Morris commercial, 7cwt van, 1098cc, 1972 - 1973 was fitted with the AUD368 SU carb.
I would suggest that the SU carb has been changed at some time in the past and the AUD368 has been used as a substitute but
the AUD13 is the correct carb for your 1098cc Morris traveller. Carbs, engines, manifolds etc. all get changed over the years so for the carb to be changed is not unusual.

There is no important difference between the carbs - just the breather tube in the side - which is a BIG advantage. Re-bush it and use it!
