1961 1000 with positive earth (at the moment!!) Have had problems with dynamos since I got my Minor. Eventually got a dynamo functioning but decided to put a later regulator in (original one had screw terminals)
All wired up correctly and working. Went inside for a well deserved cuppa. Came out and found yellow wire from dynamo to regulator and brown wire from regulator to starter/battery burnt out and a VERY HOT dead dynamo. I can only think the cutout contacts somehow got shorted (although tey were checked out, cleaned and set) Now have lost all confidence with the dynamo/regulator and thinking a rewire and alternator. Any one out there had similar experience. Also thinking a fuse between starter/battery and the former A terminal would be wise!

Indeed the contacts must have been closed -however that happened. And the Ign light would have been on - to warn you. A fuse like that is NOT a good idea! If it blows for any reason the car will either die on the spot....no lights - nothing. Or - the volts will go sky high, blowing all the bulbs (that happen to be on..) and if an alternator - ruining that too... Don't do it! If worried - you can fit a battery master switch - and use it every time you leave the car.......

Thank you bmcecosse for your comments back here - particularly the fuse. Even though an alternator connection back to the starter/battery connection, would you still steer well clear of a fuse between that juction and A terminal on the regulator?
I am taking the regulator apart and making a permanent A to A1 connection and a link between F and D so I can preserve the 'look' of the wires to the regulator.
Opening up the loom I only lost the yellow wire and brown wire - rest of loom intact but some very fused windings. OIn the whole very lucky.

I would not consider fusing that. Just renew the burned wires.
