Hi guys,

I was just pottering along in Flo this morning when I accidentally went into 2nd instead of 4th. The engine pulled a bit obviously and then since then there is a screeching noise at higher revs. Similar to the noise a dodgy alternator can make. At low revs below 2000 there was not any audible noise. Was luckily only 1 minute from work so parked up straight away and walked in.

Could it be the clutch release bearing? Easy to replace?

Side note, I don't sit on the clutch, but not had the car for too long so previous owner may have.

1275 engine. MG metro carb.

Just to clarify, the screeching is related to engine speed regardless of which gear you are in, and not just in second gear?

It was definitely screeching in any gear, not just second as I tried others. But thinking back to earlier, I believe it also made it whilst revving out of gear.

Could be as simple as the fan belt, give that a check first

Will do. My negative disposition looking for the worst bits first.

Put a dusting of talcum powder on the fan belt - it does marvels for the screeching and if scented a bonus
Alternator belts are notorious for screeching especially when all the electrics are on; that is why they have to be done up so tight and no slack.

Or - take the belt off and do a short test - is the noise gone ?

So I went back to my car and no noise, so thinking possibly the belt.

Had a look and it seems a bit worn so going to replace it.
