Hi all,

Still investigating how to sort my engine out (main bearings badly worn so I'm investigating either a rebuild, a second hand or a reconditioned). It's way beyond my skills/resources available (i.e. no garage, and limited skills ).

The above 3 options are all coming in around the same cost really when you factor in labour (apart from maybe the 2nd hand engines but then its hard to find a good one and to know its a 'good' one!). So CW seem to be cheapest reconditioned engines (1098's just under £900 inc VAT, excl fitting) and was wondering if anyone had any experience of getting the full lump from them?

Do they do the engines themselves - or do they get Professionals to do it for them?

If you know of a good place to get your own engine reconditioned then that's the option I'd go for. You'll know for sure which bits were worn and what was replaced and it could end up being cheaper if the cylinders aren't too worn and the top end is OK.

Mine got:
New main bearings
New big end bearings
New oil pump
New piston rings
New gaskets everywhere
New valve guides
New water pump
for about 150

Honing the block, cutting the crankshaft and the valve work was about 100 more so with a 900 pound budget I think you could get the best results if you start with your own engine.

There is an engine + box @ £150 in the Sale section ,,,perhaps worth investigating.

I believe Quazar do CW's engines

And has anyone dealt with them? Would almost certainly get a better price going directly to them (in Stockport) rather than through CW who will add their own %.... And you could specify what you WANT - rebore+ crank regrind etc. Otherwise there is the chance of getting a 'refreshed' engine - sometimes seen on ebay - where 'selected good' pistons are fitted (ie no rebore..) and 'new shells' (ie no regrind...) are fitted..... and still very high prices are asked - not for a minute suggesting Quazar or CW are involved with this - but such A series engines are seen on ebay regularly.
