Help with heater valve.

I have a 63 saloon with the round heater and a control for fresh or interior air. A previous owner has fitted the new type of heater control to the rear of the head, the one with the lever. It has not got a cable connecteted to it but has a piece of thick wire through the lever hole and held under the cable clamp loose enough to move it back and forth

. Can someone tell me if the control is open when the lever is toward the valve body or away from it. At a later date I might add a cable to operate it from the seat. Many thanks.
Andy

Test it by feeling the pipes! But straight up should be open.....where it should be left 365 days of the year - to keep water flowing round the back of the engine - and the heater. No need for a cable...
