has anyone done this
what is best to use.. hardboard or thin plywood
your help please guys

My car came with some hardwood cards fitted. I'd have thought thin ply would be more suitable with a suitable foam/vinyl covering.

the vinyl is very good the cards are c**p
and crumbling .
what thickness ply to use?

I did what you are thinking about using hardboard some years ago for an Escort mk1. It was easy to work with but it was a little thicker than original so made it hard work fitting the clips in place. You would need to waterproof the backs too, I painted mine with some left over gloss paint. Finished job looked good too. Good luck.

Not sure if you can get marine ply thin enough but you would still have to treat it anyway I think. If the clips would not be a problem with the card being a bit thicker I would go with hardboard it's a lot easier to work with.

Not sure if it is marine ply though. My door cards and kick panels are made from hardboard and are twisted to hell because the hardboard sucks up moisture.
I would go with plywood as over time it will retain its shape better. The best plywood to use would be Birch plywood but it is quite expensive.

Mill board is the same stuff used on the parcel shelf, I have seen it in art and craft shops but not sure about where to get it from in large quantities. Again I would not use it for door cards as it does warp quite easily. http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/p-1648-millboard.aspx
I think the best product to use would be plywood.

Woolies sell millboard but its too thin and too expensive.Both plywood and hardboard are the way to go.I recently made a full set that I covered in black vinyl (currently for sale on here with some other stuff).I used hardboard coz I'm tight.
