RE SPOTTED TODAY INFRINGEMENT OF PRIVACY

Post by LUR759H »

Why on earth are people going round taking pictures of peoples cars and posting them on the net without the car owners consent? following drivers, trying to take pictures of there cars is harassment... not to mention wrong!!!

I totally agree that spotted today is fab idea however pictures should not be taken on peoples driveways, outside owners homes. People posting images need to stop been so invasive, why does it matter if you have seen a 1956 two door travelling south on the m25 at 110mph. Its non of our business!!

If pics are to be posted they should be with permission, and the poor 74 year old popping in to Sainsbury's should be left alone to get on with his shopping!

Alan,

I'm not entirely sure I see your problem. It's a perfectly acceptable and entirely legal to take a photograph [of anything] in any public space. It can only really be considered harassment if it's deliberately malicious or unreasonably repeated.

It's really not an infringement of privacy. We drive classic cars in a world of uninspiring modern vehicles - expect to be photographed occasionally, or maybe by a Corsa and leave the pretty car in the shed.

Furthermore, the members of this forum are generally very sensible and very polite, indeed the ones I have met are. The 74 y/o doing his shopping would probably be thrilled to engage in dialect about his pride and joy with anyone - as a Young Member I get this everywhere I go, and imagine it's the same for most people on here.

In fact - am I the only one that feels it'd be quite nice to be 'Spotted' ? Maybe I need to drive more - or attempt speed runs on the M25...

I don't know if I'd go as far as starting a post about it, but tend towards agreeing with Alan. As I see it, most people nowadays seem to be anxious for all to know their business (social media etc!) and assume everyone is the same, whereas some may wish to keep their lives private. A long time ago on this forum we had a bout of folk broadcasting their ailments on line! Once one started the ball kept rolling! However regarding the 'spotted' subject, maybe no need for pictures, we all know what a Minor looks like!

I too can't see what the problem is. Should we not look at other people's cars in case we invade their privacy? It's not like we give an exact address of where the car was spotted, and in some cases the car will be seen by hundreds of passers-by every day.
Perhaps those deeply concerned with privacy should cloak their car in a burka with a slot so they can see where their driving!

Personally I just think it would be polite and give people the option of not having there images posted on the net!! and at the moment no one has a choice! and as they are images of our personal lives I think its totally unfair.
Things are slightly different if we are intentionally exhibiting, or if we are posting pictures of our own cars...

How would it be if we started a "Blond spotted 19y/o today".

That is totally different and you know it! You are NOT your car, and vice versa. If we were posting pictures of people without their knowledge then I would agree with you, but we're not, and as far as I can remember in the last nine years since I joined this forum this "problem" has never been mentioned.

Out of interest, precisely why did you choose "19y/o blonde" as an example?

I have had a couple of my cars photographed unknowingly to me and pasted up on Flickr. Sometimes, it's flattering and pleasing to see your car through another person's camera lens, other times it does make you wonder about privacy infringement.

In fact, I was surprised to find one of these 'enthusiasts' (at the Crich steam rally up in Derbyshire) had also deemed it necessary to paste up all the registration details of any vehicle he had photographed, including the tax status, etc. :o

Note also, on that Flickr link I provided, the images are 'copyright protected'. I wonder if the photographer (a professional, judging by his homepage) actually had the owners' permissions to take all those shots?

So if you do not want your car to be photographed by anyone other than yourself just leave it in your garage 365 days a year and then every now again you can go and look at it and maybe if not too contraversial take a photo of it collecting dust, because we all know that is what a car is designed to do. Otherwise you can drive round and have fun in a car that stands out (hence the photographs) and chance being photographed whilst driving on the M25 or whilst shopping at Sainsbury's (at least its not Lidl).

i see this from both sides...
many many years ago my late father was tinkering with his
old motorbike a rudge ulster.
when 2 young bikers call in and admired his bike...
they asked to take a photo..which my dad agreed.
they seemed nice guys
about 3 days later. at night someone tried to break into his garage....

well my dad being a shooting man soon scared them off
one shotgun in hand he fired one off and they moved quicker
than the dog we had
so if people take photos it could be for the love of the car..
or bike etc
or to clone it nick it ,,
or parts off it

There is the answer then if someone takes a picture of your car inform them you own a shotgun, or if leaving the car leave a note stating this.

Or heaven forbid, (Ahem) Associated Dairies!

I aggree with Mr.Q.
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!
