Has anyone got any tips for me to prepair my 1275 Moggy for a 5 speed gearbox mod. I have not bought any parts yet but will be so very soon,I hear the type 9 ford gearbox is the way to go but i have seen that these can have a normal length remote shift or a shortened one so as the gearstick comes up through the original hole.I have had al new carpets made and fitted so dont really want to disturb these unless i have to .

Are you planning on keeping the mechanical clutch linkage, or going for a hydraulic kit too?

Lots of advantages to the five speed box - including a place for a proper reverse light switch.

Much easier and a LOT less expensive to just fit a 3.7 ratio final drive !

Where and how would you get one of those then?

One currently on 'e' bay item No: 371120027157 at a 'Buy It Now' price of £275.

In the sellers 'other items' are items which may be of interest to other Minor owners i.e. Riley 1.5 front brakes etc.

Although that seems a LOT for a 3.7 final drive - it will always be worth that - unless you break it! A 3.7 Crown wheel and pinion from MOSS is almost £400...

I am enamoured with this idea !

Have you, or others any direkt experience of how it drives with this conversion?

I have a 3.9 and find it very nice to drive. You can buy a 3.9 or a 3.7CWP from Bastuck for ~250€ incl VAT.

That's a MUCH better price ! And they list the 'mysterious' 3.55 Final Drive CWP at the same price !

Bastuck is distributing these worldwide. Looking at the wrapping it came in, they are made in Turkey.

Turkey? Hmmm -what's the quality like ? Do you know anyone who has used any of their parts? They may very well be the parts being supplied by 'the usual suspects' in UK of course!

Quality seems OK. The fit was quite tight and I had to remove all the shims on the crown wheel side of the carrier to get the correct backlash. It is OK though.

Yes I have fitted it and it's fine. As I mentioned quite a tight fit -any tighter would have meant turning a couple of thou off the crown wheel side of the carrier.

The price of €246 is just for the pinion wheel and plate (my translation) whereas the whole front end assembly is €600 plus. I would not trust myself to fit the components.

It's up to you - not too difficult - just follow the Manual instructions..

Correct, the that price is for the CWP (Crown wheel and pinion). Fitting them correctly is a totally different story !

Today in Germany the Police are having a much publicised nationwide "blitztag", i.e the mobile speed cameras are everywhere. There is a well frequented downhill section with 70km/hr which is always a good source of revenue for the local government so I was paying more than usual careful attention.

As I was driving along watching the dial, it occurred to me that fitting a diff with a 3,77 /1 ration one would also mean a new speedometer calibrated to this new gear ratio. ....and according to my catalogue; there ain't one!!

What to do?

Ahh - but there is !! The Mini speedo fits right in - and there is one with a 1249 tpm which gives DEAD ACCURATE speed and distance readings with a 3.7 final drive. Not sure if there is a KPM version though...

My speedo is spot on with the 3.9 CWP and 145 tyres when compared with a sat nav (GPS).
