I understand you can have a hood made of vinyl which is very thin or mohair which is more expensive,has anyone got any ideas which is best,,is mohair stronger and are you restricted to a narrow range of colours

Mohair is the best and very hardwearing

Vinyl isnt necessarily thinner than mohair or double duck.The latter two are cloth on the outside with a waterproofing layer on the underside.Vinyl is plastic on the outside usually with a cloth type backing for strength(the more expensive types anyway).Price is the major factor as all can be bought in black,white,cream,blue,red,burgundy etc etc.You can get a vinyl one in black for a little over £150 on Ebay.Mohair(which also comes in different qualities)is 3 times that price.

And in my opinion a vinyl roof is not only cheaper but easier to clean / keep clean.

The best material in my opinion is called "Sonnenland". It's what BMW uses (Audi also I think) on the modern convertibles, To me it Looks like polyester. I had a tonneau cover made for my MG TD in this material by a local trimmer and it turned out lovely. If I ever need to replace the double duck hood on mine that is what I would do. It turned out cheaper than what Moss charges. THe same guy also did the sleather seats for me.
