Introducing myself and looking for advice

Afternoon all,

I thought I would pop a post on here to introduce myself.

I have just gotten rid of my (thirsty) Jaguar X-type and am thinking I might replace her with a Moggy as my daily driver. My route to work is 13 miles and is all steady A-road (read 45-50mph) with a brief bit of dual carriageway at the end. A task I think (hope) a Minor would cope with admirably.I also work away about 60% of the time so my total annual miles would be about 4-5000.

I have always serviced my own cars and also run a fairly ageing kit car so I am aware of which end of a spanner to hang on to. I have also read through a couple of buying guides so I know a little bit of what to look out for, I am hoping to spend around the £2,000 mark which I hope will get me a reasonable late 60's 1098 saloon. I wouldn't want anything concourse (not that I'd get it for my budget) as I don't want to "spoil" it with daily use.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me starting down this road? Also, if anyone could point me towards any articles or books describing the regular (and seasonal) maintenance requirements of these little beasts I would be most grateful. I have already ordered the 2 workshop manuals I am aware of (Haynes and the original BMC) and a copy of "Morris Minor - the worlds suprememe small car" which I saw mentioned on this very board.

My initial thoughts on a car are that if I'm going to use it all year round (which I plan to) I may need to do a couple of things to it if they aren't already done:

- Unleaded Head
- Uprated heater (2 speed mini maybe?)
- stereo
- Uprated Headlights
- Alternator conversion (to assist with the above three items)
- Immobiliser (Insurance requirement on my most recent quote)

Any help or advice most gratefully received!

Thanks
Jimmy

Looks like a sound plan to me. I bought my traveller this year and use it for a commute of 14 miles each way. A 1098 will cope fine and I'd only want to uprate if I was using much dual carriageway as 60 gets noisy and at anything less gets under the feet of the truckers.
I added alternator and halogens but after back flushing heater a few times found it was well up to the job and I don't need to change to a mini unit. I'm using unleaded and waiting for the valves to recede before doing the valve seats.
Welcome and good luck!
John
