I know the gearbox has a certain whine when moving in first or reverse but after the first test drive in the traveller yesterday I've noticed the whine is accompanied by a bit of a scratching/grinding noise. It's been so long since I've driven a minor I can't remember if it's normal or not! I assume the gearbox shouldn't be making the grinding noise in 1st? Any obvious diagnosis?
Also the engine wants to stall when the clutch pedal is down when the car is stationary. Worn clutch?

Re: Gearbox whine
Stalling could just be too low idle speed - but also a sign of the clutch pedal perhaps going down more than necessary. There should be minimum 1" free play at the pedal. First gear often takes a hammering - first check - is there any oil ? If the other gears are working ok/not noisy - don't worry.
