Ribcase gearbox behind a 948

Post by don58van »

Hi

I did a search on this and was surprised that I could only find a couple of threads that mentioned it.

My issue is that my smoothcase has damaged teeth on the laygear (1st). New replacements don't seem to be available.

Good used replacements seem to be very scarce too.

I have access to a ribcase (which I know is a better design, and a full range of new parts is available).

So, is there any information I need to know about fitting the ribcase behind a 948 that isn't covered in the following thread?

http://mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=4&t= ... se#p481236

I don't have a spare 1098 engine backplate.

Cheers
Don

I did this conversion myself using a 1098cc back plate, you can't use the 948cc back plate because it is recessed, a 1098cc fly wheel and a 1098cc clutch kit. Worked really well, not so revvy. You'll have to change down a tad earlier on hills than you would have done with the 948cc box though because of the higher gear ratios on the 1098cc box.

I think if you fit the release arm and carbon thrust from the old (smooth) gearbox - then you can use the ribcase box with all the 948 parts. (backplate/flywheel and clutch) . The ratios are not that different - don't worry.
