I went for the low-tech approach, and hung a mirror on the wall behind where the car is parked.

I'm working on the principle that several turns of copper wire around a reed switch will create sufficient magnetic flux to operate the switch if both are working, following that a simple latch circuit and Led will suffice. I just need to know if anybody has done similar and if there were any heat problems

I went for a brake light in the bottom of the rear window, a strip of leds in a holder.

Its not the most period thing but we have all got used to them being there in the middle at eye level, the Minor lights are quite low down on the wings and if someone's not paying attention, crunch.

I would rather the light than a crumpled rear end, advantage is I can see the reflection in the window, so I know its working.
