The small washer on the inside of the rocker cover has fallen in, i cant get it out without re glueing the gasket will it harm just to leave it??? its about 10mm in size and goes on one of the bolts that holds the cover down - this is NOT one of the large external washers....

Fallen in to where? Onto the rocker assembly? I wouldn't leave it there.

I don't bother gluing that gasket, the oil keeps it lubricated on the inside. Make sure the cover is sufficiently tight and it should compress the cork appropriately. The manual says the should be tightened to 2 lb ft, but again, I don't bother... just nip them up tightish!

Why is there a small washer in there? Get it out! And you only glue the gasket to the cover so you can use it over and over again - so where's the problem opening it up ???

fare enough! the washer has come from under the back bolt basically out of the two cover bolts the one nearest the bulkhead the top nut will not detach from the bolt and so when removing the nut the whole bolt detaches from the top of the engine, below it was a small washer this washer has fallen in and for me to relocate it ill need to remove the cover again.... ill take the advice and get it out!!!

thanks guys

Get it all separated when it's off - there should be a long STUD screwed down through the rocker pedestal - and the pedestal held down then by a washer and nut (1/2" AF) - the rocker cover is secured to the stud by a hollow nut (5/8" AF) - which you DO NOT tighten much at all - just gently 'nipped up' - not much more. Overtightening just collapses the rocker cover and then it will NEVER seal the gasket. If yours appears to be collapsed - lay it on a sand bag and gently tap it back to shape before refitting.

yes the long stud is about 3.5 inches long this is held in with a nut and washer its this washer that has fallen - not the top nut!

Now's the chance to put it all back correctly - and clean out the rocker cover - and make sure the breather is clear.

It sounds like the stud that retains the rocker pedestal has come out with the hollow nut, thats why you have a loose washer.

Hi all some of you will know I had a problem with a dropped washer into the cylinder head as a consequence of me replacing the head gasket, well I think ive discovered the problem the cap nut on the long stud near the bulkhead turns the stud out of the cylinder head, the thread on the small nut seems to be gone, I suspect the thread on the cylinder head my also be gone but I am not sure until I get a replacement stud.

Can anyone help...

Thanks Alan[frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]

Looks fine to me - just grip the stud as carefully as possible - and unscrew the external 'rocker cover' nut. Then the internal small nut. The thread in the head will be fine. Just refit the stud - you need to lock two nuts together to do that - 'borrow' one from elsewhere. Then remove the extra locking nut - tighten down the rocker pillar with the errant washer under the nut - and then refit the rocker cover! You may be needing new rubber seals in the rocker cover .

The prob is the rocker cover nut is fitted extremely tight and will not unscrew I'll try the nut on the other end later today and let you know how I get on.

Thanks for responding

Alan

The thread on the other end is UNC - DO NOT attempt to put a UNF nut on there! Just hold the small nut with a 1/2" AF spanner - and slacken the top 'hollow' nut with a 5/8" AF spanner - it WILL come off !
