Hi all, im fairly new to driving my 1965 Moggy Minor. Its my second week. I ended up at the side of the road on its first planned trip (coil failed) and ive just got back from a successful 20 mile round trip to work. When I got back I popped the bonnet to check things over. The inline fuel filter was empty. But fuel was still trickling in. I went to shut her down and smelt fuel, the fuel bowl had flooded (ill have that apart later to clear the valve and float chamber) I noticed that the fuel line from the filter to the pump was quite hot, its as far away from the exhaust manifold as it can be. Could this be causing a problem? Could it be vaporizing the fuel causing the pump to pump air into the bowl? If that makes any sense at all. It seems fine on the road (I can't smell fuel whilst out on the road)
Cheers, Dan

Re: Hot fuel pipe?
Why do you think the coil failed ? It's NEVER the coil!! Refit the old coil temporarily - does the engine run?? Overflowing bowl indicates leaking float valve - you will need a new one. And I recommend removing the fuel filter - it's not necessary.... There is a filter in the pump. Hot line = fuel vapourisation, which is much more likely to be the cause of last week's 'breakdown' - and the fuel filter only adds to the load on the pump. You can try 'insulating' the line.....the real 'fix' is to mount the pump lower down in the engine bay.

Re: Hot fuel pipe?
Why is it 'Never the coil' !? seems to be plenty of them failing on this site. And yes it was the coil. Once it was removed and replaced I got home under its own power (and was fine today) with the old coil fitted the engine missfires to the point where it has no power at all. Im not putting that coil back on just to be stuck at the side of the road again! Can't see the point at all.
Ill remove the float bowl tonight for cleaning. I have lots of spare carbs. So ill carry a spare float chamber with me tomorrow. I guess I could remove the filter. Doesn't seem to be pulling any gunk from the tank.

Re: Hot fuel pipe?
Maybe it was a wrongly specified coil. Good old coils NEVER fail - unless physically damaged of course... It can however be bad connections at the coil. When a coil 'fails' it's all or nothing - so the fact your engine still ran tells me the coil itself is fine.. If you test it and it works - it will be worth carrying as a spare - in case you meet someone else who 'thinks' their coil has failed !

Lets not forget the Lumenition coils that have an internal thermal fuse. They can appear to fail...

Glad to be back!
