Can anyone tell me which way the oil thrower on the small sprocket of the timing chain goes? The Haynes manual says to replace it the way it came off - on my engine the cupped side was facing the sprocket i.e. facing to the rear. The exploded diagram seems to show it facing forwards - which is correct?

The cup (the concave) should face the front of the engine (timing cover).
The way yours was fitted it would be ineffective and would allow oil to saturate the felt seal to the point where it would leak past.
The idea of the cup is that it shrouds the felt seal and throws off any oil before it gets to the felt seal.
But of course in practice some oil does get to the seal and which is needed to keep the felt moist and effective.

As an aside if the lip seal is fitted there are two types of oil thrower plate used - a totally flat plate and a plate with a concave centre. Again the concave should face forward. The lip seal is not so susceptible to leaking if the seal and rubbing surfaces are good so even if the thrower plate was fitted the wrong way round it would not be the end of the world.

2nd vote for forward - this is one of the problems with Haynes - replace it as you found it......and if it was wrong, it stays wrong! Oh dear. You are wise to ask! You can find a free download of the REAL Workshop Manual if you consult Mr Google. As an aside - the early felt seal is pretty desperate - the later lip seal is MUCH better, but does need a suitable timing cover - it can't be fitted to a felt seal cover.

Strange - I've just checked the Haynes Manual and it clearly states that the oil thrower MUST be replaced with the concave or dished side facing FORWARD.......???

There may be different editions......
