Does anyone know the story behind brass trunnions?

I know the VERY early cars were fitted with them originally, but when were they discontinued?

Also I THINK they might be a different size to the later ones....... anyone confirm/deny this?

I don't think my '52 MM should have them, but I can't seem to find any info on them..........

I believe very early cars had brass trunnions and they quickly developed rattles in service. The replacement trunnions had rubber bushes and were different in size too. I don't remember if the old trunnions can be replaced by the new.

If I remember correctly my BMC workshop manual suggests that the earlier type were no longer availiable and therefore if any work was needed then updated ones were to be fitted. I'm guessing that very few cars would have done both the low mileage and good maintanence to keep the old type of trunnion alive ..
